This festival, which many of us have celebrated since childhood, brings with it cherished memories and a deep connection to our cultural roots. But beyond the grandeur of public celebrations lies the real, intimate joy of welcoming Lord Ganesha into our homes - and this blog is all about it.

Here, we will help you learn about the significance of the Ganesh Chaturthi, and provide you with a step-by-step guide on how to perform the Ganesh Chaturthi puja at home.

Why is Ganesh Chaturthi Celebrated? History & Significance

Why is Ganesh Chaturthii Celebrated

Ganesh Chaturthi marks the birth of Lord Ganesha, the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.

The festival is believed to have originated in Maharashtra, where it was popularized by the Maratha ruler Shivaji Maharaj. However, it was during the freedom struggle that Lokmanya Tilak promoted Ganesh Chaturthi from a private celebration to a public event which came to be known as Ganeshotsava. This somewhere encouraged unity among people and inspired a sense of nationalism.

Date, Time & Shubh Muhurat 2024

This year i.e., in 2024, Ganesh Chaturthi will be celebrated on Saturday, September 7th. The festival usually falls in the month of Bhadrapada (August-September) and usually lasts for 10 days, culminating on Anant Chaturdashi, when the idol of Lord Ganesha is immersed in water.

The Shubh Muhurat for Ganesh Chaturthi 2024, which is the most auspicious time to bring Lord Ganesha's idol home, begins at 11:09 AM and ends at 1:36 PM. During this time, devotees can perform the Pran Pratishtha ceremony, which involves invoking the deity into the idol.

Steps to Do Ganesh Chaturthi Pooja at Home

Celebrating Ganesh Chaturthi at home involves several sacred rituals that allow you to connect deeply with Lord Ganesha. Here’s a detailed guide on how to perform the pooja:

  • Preparations: Clean your home, especially the area where you plan to place the Ganesh idol. Decorate the space with flowers, rangoli, and some fairy lights.
  • Placement of the Idol: On the day of Ganesh Chaturthi, bring the idol home during the Shubh Muhurat. Place it on a clean, decorated platform, preferably facing the east or north direction.
  • Pran Pratishtha: This is the ritual where you invoke the deity into the idol. Begin by offering Panchamrit, followed by water, to bathe the idol. After that, dress the idol in new clothes or drape a red cloth over it.
  • Offering Sweets and Fruits: Offer fruits, especially bananas, coconut and sweets like modaks and laddoos to Lord Ganesha.
  • Aarti: Light incense sticks and a diya (lamp). Perform the aarti by circling the diya in front of the idol while singing the Ganesh aarti.
  • Chanting and Prayers: Recite Ganesh mantras and offer your prayers. Seek blessings from the almighty and ask for forgiveness for any of your sins.
  • Distribution of Prasad: After performing the pooja, distribute the prasad (offering) among family members and guests. This is considered a blessing from Lord Ganesha.
  • Daily Rituals: For all the days that Lord Ganesha stays in your home, perform a small pooja every morning and evening. Offer fresh flowers, chant mantras, and perform aarti daily.

How Many Days Should You Keep Ganesha at Home?

How Many Days Should You Keep Ganesha at Home

The duration of keeping Lord Ganesha at home can vary. Traditionally, the idol is kept for one and a half days, three days, five days, seven days, or the full ten days of the festival. The immersion, or Visarjan, takes place on the last day of the chosen period.

On the day of Visarjan, a final aarti is performed before the idol is carried to the water body symbolizing Lord Ganesha’s return to his heavenly abode, taking away all the obstacles and misfortunes with him. During the procession, chants of Ganpati Bappa Morya fill the air, which creates a whole vibrant and energetic atmosphere all around.

Takeaway

This year, as you prepare to celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi, take the time to understand the rituals, involve your family, and create memories that will last a lifetime. May Lord Ganesha bless you and your loved ones with wisdom, prosperity, and happiness. Ganpati Bappa Morya!
