The Journey of Ayyappa Swamy- Birth, Mission & Divine Revelation

Ayyappa Swamy's history started even before he was born. The birth of Manikanthan was a planned, divine intervention for a very meaningful reason– the destruction of the demoness Mahishi, sister of the demon Mahishashura, who was slain by Maa Durga.

Let’s decipher each of the deity’s journeys from an adopted kid to the Dharma protector -

The Divine Birth of Lord Ayyappa

The birth of Ayyappan is associated with the full moon day of Pauguni Uthiram (April/May), a widely celebrated festival across the southern states of India. Ayyappan Swamy's birthday (Ayyappan Jayanti) is celebrated on 14th April.

Swamy Ayyappa was born with the divine union of Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu. This greatest union occurred to destroy the demoness Mahishi, who had received a boon from Lord Brahma that she could be defeated only by a child with the divine powers of Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu (in the enchanting form of Mohini). Therefore, the incarnation of Ayyappa was the restoration of righteousness and the destruction of evil.

How Lord Ayyappa became the Prince

The divine child Iyyappan was the HariHaraputra, but was adopted by King Rajashekaran Pandiyan near the banks of the river Pampa. The King and Queen had no kids and had been praying for years to have them. When they saw the divine child, he assumed his prayers had been answered.

He was adopted by the king and raised as a prince, and thus named Manikandan or Manikanthan, as the divine child wore a bell around his neck. Manikandan grew older, displaying extraordinary wisdom, compassion, strength, and divine powers. However, his true identity remained hidden from the kingdom till his purpose was achieved.

Swamy Ayyappan Destroys the Demoness Mahishi

Ayyappan was greatly loved by his father, King Rajashekaran, but when the king decided to make the divine child, HariHara putra, the heir to his throne, the queen was a bit reluctant because she wanted her blood son to be the heir. Therefore, the queen became influenced by the evil intentions of pretending to be severely ill, and the royal physician declared the only cure for her illness was tigress milk, which could be a difficult task to complete.

To fulfill the queen’s wish, Manikandan willingly journeyed into the forest. There, he confronted and defeated the demoness Mahishi after a fierce battle, freeing the world from her terror. Following his victory, the divine truth about Manikandan was revealed.

Revelation of Swamy Ayyappan’s Sabrimala Journey

After defeating Mahishi, completing his divine mission of being born as Lord Ayyappa to the kingdom, riding on a tigress, and witnessing this miracle, the King realized his adopted son, Manikanthan, was no ordinary person but an incarnation of divine power to save humanity.

After his gigantic story and the fulfillment of his purpose, Lord Ayyappa walked down into the dense forests of the Western Ghats and chose the Sabrimala hills as his spiritual abode. He chose to be the celibate deity who is welcoming to every devotee who shows up at his abode seeking a pure heart and sincere effort.

Talking about the sincerity of his devotees walking towards his abode, today, millions of people undertake the pilgrimage to Sabrimala. They choose this path with utmost sincerity, through 41 days of vratham (fasting), chanting “Swamiye Saranam Ayyappa,” and seeking transformation through faith, self-control, and devotion.

The story of Lord Ayyappa is deeply connected to the sacred traditions of Sabarimala. Let us now explore the spiritual significance of Sabarimala Temple and the sacred rituals associated with Lord Ayyappa worship.

Important Ayyappa Rituals and Their Spiritual Significance- Sabrimala Pilgrimage

Sabarimala Pilgrimage is one of the world's annual pilgrimages, with around 40-50 million pilgrims visiting each year. The Sabrimala season is said to be in November-January, called the Mandala Makaravillaku season. In this pilgrimage, devotees (called swami) climb

Ayyappa worship is a spiritual path built on discipline, self-control, devotion, and equality. These sacred rituals not only invoke devotion but also purify the mind and body while guiding devotees towards inner peace and spiritual awakening.

The Ayyappan worship ritual is symbolic and has spiritual significance, teaching simplicity, humility, discipline, and unwavering faith. From the 41-day vratham and Mandala Deeksha to the sacred 18 steps of Sabrimala temple (Pathinettampadi) and the Irumudi Kettu carried by the devotee.

The 41-Day Vratham (Austerity)

41 days Vratham, also known as Ayyappa deeksha, is a spiritually intense preparation for the Sabarimala pilgrimage. The period usually starts in mid-November and lasts one mandalam, often 41-48 days. During this period, devotees are called Swami, preparing themselves physically and mentally to lead a satvic lifestyle, focusing on purification, self-control, devotion, and the avoidance of evil thoughts.

The important rules and regulations followed by devotees during the 41-day Ayyappa Deeksha are-

Guidelines for Women

Women under 10 years old or post-menopausal women are allowed to perform deeksha.

Significance: The 41 days of rigorous Vratham help devotees achieve self-purification of mind and soul and realize that everyone is equal, irrespective of caste, colour, or status. The completion of this vratham is necessary to carry the Irumudi and to climb the 18 holy steps of the Sabarimala Temple, which concludes with the Mandala pooja. Thus, the varatham strengthens you enough to carry the life sorrows and struggles of life.

The 18 sacred steps (Pathinettampadi) & its Significance

The 18 sacred steps are very important and hold deep significance in the devotee's spiritual journey. The 18 steps, also known as Pathinettampadi (in Malayalam), at the Sabrimala Ayyappa Temple, located in the Periyar Tiger Reserve (Kerala), are a divine climb to reach the sanctum where Sabreeshwaran is seated in a meditative position with half-closed eyes, symbolizing deep meditation and inner peace. These steps entail shedding worldly attachments and seeking a life of dharma, devotion, and selflessness, and the journey from materialistic to spiritual enlightenment.

Traditionally, these golden steps can only be climbed by the devotee who carries the Irumudi Kettu. The 18 steps are believed to symbolize various spiritual concepts, which include:

The five senses

The steps 1-5 represent the 5 senses (Panjendriams) like smell, hearing, sight, taste, and touch.

The eight ragas (emotions)

Steps 6-13 represent the 8 Ashtaragas (negative emotions), which include: Kama (desire), Krodha (anger), Lobha (Greed), Moha (Lust), Madam (Pride), Matsaryam (Competition), Thanbha (Boastfulness), and Asuya (Jealousy).

The three gunas (qualities)

Steps 14-16 represent the three Gunas: Tamas (inertia), Rajas (passion), and Satva (Goodness)

Knowledge (Vidya) & Ignorance (Avidya)

Step 17 of the Ayyappan Sabrimala temple represents knowledge, and step 18 represents ignorance or the ultimate surrender to the Divine.

Irumudi Kettu and its Spiritual Uniqueness

The Irumdi Kettu is a sacred prayer kit carried by devotee on their heads to the pilgrimage to Sabrimala. The word “Irumdi” means “two sacred two-compartment cloth bag representing duality– worldly life and spiritual life.

The front pouch, called Munmudi, contains an offering for Lord Ayyappa, including a coconut filled with ghee, camphor (Kapur), rice, and pooja items, while the back pouch, called Pinmudi, contains the devotee’s personal travel supplies.

The Irumudi kettu is a spiritual symbol of surrender, responsibility, devotion, and spiritual preparedness. Carrying it over the head symbolizes humility and dedication to Lord Ayyappa.

Its distinctiveness is rooted in the notion that when a follower bears the Irumudi, they are regarded as equal to every other pilgrim, irrespective of caste, social standing, or origin — embodying the fundamental spiritual tenet of harmony and equality in Ayyappa devotion.

  • Lord Ayyappa is regarded as the divine offspring of Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu in the form of Mohini.

  • He is also known as Hariharaputra, Manikandan, and Dharma Shasta, among other revered titles.

  • Lord Ayyappa manifested to conquer the demoness Mahishi and restore dharma.

  • The Sabarimala Temple stands as one of the holiest pilgrimage destinations dedicated to Lord Ayyappa.

  • Devotees undertake a 41-day vratham and adhere to strict spiritual practices before the pilgrimage.

  • Rituals such as the 18 sacred steps and Irumudi Kettu represent spiritual cleansing, equality, and devotion.

Therefore, rooted in Hindu mythology and Puranic traditions, Lord Ayyappa’s story carries spiritual significance and divinity that reflect devotion, discipline, and spiritual transformation.
