The free sky under which we breathe today has been earned through a lot of hard work and sacrifices. This article provides an overview of the freedom fighters and their struggles over time to achieve Indian independence.

A Journey Towards Independence

The journey towards independence is approached differently by each individual. The Indian freedom struggle was a long and determined fight against British rule. Some believed in non-violent movements like Mahatma Gandhi, and some gave out a call to the Indian's patriotic nature, like Subhas Chandra Bose and Bhagat Singh. Some, like Dr. Rajendra Prasad and Vallabhbhai Patel, kept the idea of unity alive and strengthened mass unity.

This journey towards India's freedom united people of all regions, religions, and backgrounds through the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The mass movements, revolts, and various revolutionary movements give an idea of the sacrifices and contributions.

Freedom Fighter who Shaped India’s Destiny

Many fighters participated in the cause of the Indian freedom struggle. A few of the freedom fighters' names are worth discussing. Countless freedom fighters shaped India’s journey to independence, beginning with the first freedom fighters of India and continuing across generations. But there are the ones who come to mind first.

Mahatma Gandhi (1869-1948)

Mahatma Gandhi played a transformative role in India's freedom struggle through his principles of Satyagraha (truth) and Ahimsa (non-violence). Believing that peaceful resistance could challenge injustice, he led several landmark movements, including the Champaran Satyagraha, the Salt March, and the Quit India Movement, inspiring millions to join the fight for independence.

Beyond political freedom, Gandhi worked towards social reform by advocating for the eradication of untouchability, promoting equality, and encouraging self-reliance through the Swadeshi Movement and Khadi. His ideals of peace, simplicity, and non-violence continue to influence leaders and movements across the world, making him one of the most respected figures in modern history.

Subhas Chandra Bose (1897-1945)

Subhas Chandra Bose was one of India's most dynamic freedom fighters, known for his unwavering determination to achieve independence. After successfully clearing the Indian Civil Services (ICS) examination, he resigned to dedicate himself to the nation's cause and became one of the leaders of India.

His call of “Give me blood, and I will give you freedom,” ignited hope in the minds of countless Indians. Through Bose in India Freedom Fighters established their Indian National Army (INA) and later the Azad Hind Government, inspiring countless Indians. He later served as the President of the Indian National Congress before charting his own path of resistance. His bold leadership and revolutionary efforts significantly strengthened India's struggle for independence.

Bhagat Singh (1907-1931)

Bhagat Singh, as a freedom fighter, emerged as one of the powerful voices of revolutionary nationalism at a very young age. He founded the Naujawan Bharat Sabha after being deeply influenced by the struggle against British rule and became a key member of the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HSRA).

To avenge the death of Lala Lajpat Rai, he participated in the Saunders Assassination. He also later carried out the Central Legislative Assembly Bombing to protest against colonial policies. Executed at just 23 years of age, Bhagat Singh became a martyr whose rallying cry, "Inquilab Zindabad," continues to inspire generations of young Indians.

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel (1875-1950)

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was a prominent leader of India's freedom movement, known for his determination, discipline, and exceptional leadership. Inspired by Mahatma Gandhi's ideals, he played a pivotal role in the Kheda Satyagraha in 1918 and led a successful Bardoli Satyagraha movement in 1928, earning him the title of "Sardar."

A skilled organizer and nation-builder, Patel helped strengthen the Indian National Congress and mobilize people nationwide. After independence, his greatest achievement was the integration of over 560 princely states, laying the foundation for a united India and earning him the title "Iron Man of India."

Dr. Rajendra Prasad (1884–1963)

Dr. Rajendra Prasad was one of the freedom fighters, a lawyer, and one of the most respected leaders of India's independence movement. Deeply influenced by Mahatma Gandhi, he actively participated in the Champaran Satyagraha, the Non-Cooperation Movement, and the Quit India Movement, enduring imprisonment for his commitment to the nation. Known for his humility, integrity, and dedication to public service, he played a crucial role in mobilizing people during the freedom struggle. After independence, he became the first President of India, helping shape the young republic while upholding democratic values and national unity.
