Understanding the Fierce Form of Goddess Kalaratri

Proceeding towards the seventh day of Navratri, the fierce incarnation of goddess Durga i.e., Maa Kalratri is celebrated.

Kalratri is made up of two terms Kala (काल) meaning time and Ratri which refers to night. Hence, Maa Kalratri is the one who can defy the chakra of time. However, the term Kalratri is also associated with the dark appearance of the goddess which is as dark as the night.

The Mythological Tale Associated with Maa Kalratri

According to the legends, there were two demons named Shumbh and Nishumbh who with the help of devils Chand, Munda, and Raktabeej had created havoc in the trilok. No one was able to defeat them and the situation was just worsening with every passing day. This is when Lord Indra along with other dev gurus reached out to Maa Parvati. Seeing everyone so helpless, Goddess created Maa Chandi to kill the demons. Hereafter, Maa Chandi courageously fought the devils on the battlefield and slayed Shumbh and Nishumbh. However, she was unable to kill Chanda, Munda, and Raktabeej due to the special boons granted to them by the gods.

This is when Maa Chandi took the form of Kalaratri and killed Chanda Munda (which also brought her the name Chamunda). But she still struggled to kill Raktabeej as he had a boon from Lord Brahma that every drop of his blood falling on the ground would give birth to his clone. Nonetheless resolute about her purpose, Maa Kalratri went ahead and drank the blood of Rakhtbeej so that none of it would fall on the ground. And soon, there was a moment when she finally put him to death to restore balance in the universe. 

Hence, Maa Kalratri is revered as the destroyer of all evil forces and the goddess of strength and valor.

Iconography and Symbolism of Maa Kalratri

Goddess Kalratri is depicted as having a dark complexion and disheveled hair, riding a mule. She is portrayed with four hands, wherein the left ones hold a lethal iron hook and a sword while the right ones rest in Abhaya and Varada mudra.  

What’s important to know about Maa Kalratri’s fierce nature is only for the evils so that she can safeguard her devotees from the negative forces. Besides this, she is believed to free anyone who worships her, from any distress or hindrances in life.

Puja Vidhi for Goddess Kalratri

Here are some rituals to worship Maa Kalratri:

• Begin with taking a bath to purify your body. Meanwhile, also make sure to clean the surroundings where you’ll be performing the puja rituals.
• Light a diya along with some incense sticks to create a fragrant and calming aura. 
• Offer flowers, fruits (or any homemade bhog prasad), and kumkum to Maa Kalratri.
• Next, recite Durga Chalisa and chant the Kalratri mantras for strength and courage.
• Conclude the puja ceremony with Durga or maa Kalratri aarti seeking the blessings of the goddess.
