Raksha bhandhan

One of the most popular stories is that of Lord Krishna and Draupadi. Once Lord Krishna injured his finger and seeing his wound bleed Draupadi tore a piece of her sari to tie a bandage around it. Lord Krishna was deeply touched by this gesture and promised to protect Draupadi all his life. And Krishna stood true to his promise which was clearly witnessed during the infamous episode of disrobing in the Kaurava court, where Krishna protected the dignity of Draupadi.

Another legend is about Yama, the god of death, and his sister Yamuna. It is said that once when Yama visited Yamuna, she tied a rakhi on his wrist. Moved by this gesture, Yama granted her a boon of immortality. Hence, ever since then, it is believed that any brother who gets a rakhi tied by his sister would also be blessed with a long life and protection.

3. Rani Karnavati and Emperor Humayun

A historical tale speaks of the power of rakhi beyond familial bonds.

It was during the medieval period when Queen Karnavati of Mewar sent a rakhi to Mughal Emperor Humayun, seeking his protection against an invasion set out by Bahadur Shah. Touched by her gesture, Humayun honored the rakhi and immediately set out to help defend her kingdom.

These stories, whether mythological or historical, underline the values of protection, respect, and love that Raksha Bandhan stands for.

Rituals and Celebrations

Raksha Bandhan is a day filled with rituals and joyous celebrations.

The day typically begins with the sisters preparing the puja thali, which includes the rakhi, rice grains, kumkum, diya (lamp), and sweets. Brothers and sisters wear new clothes and gather for the ceremony along with other family members.

The ritual starts with the sister performing an aarti (a ceremonial act of worship) for her brother, applying a tilak (vermilion mark) on his forehead, and tying the rakhi around his wrist while chanting prayers for his well-being. In return, brothers give gifts to their sisters, promising to protect and support them in every sphere of life.

After the ritual, families come together to enjoy a festive meal. Traditional sweets like ladoos, barfis, and kheer are prepared and shared. It's a time for families to bond, share stories, and create memories.
